Meet Arthur, a buffet that is offered in his original condition and in 3 more years will officially be an antique. He imbues the solid, dependable character, his name suggests. Arthur was made by Charak Furniture Co, which dated and numbered its work, as visible on the label inside the top drawer. Interestingly, the "Mafs." stamped into the mark? Not a typo. It's "Mass." written with the old long s (ſ), an antique typographic flourish Charak leaned into to honor the colonial era their furniture echoed.

Arthur is still well-proportioned for today's modern life, and built with the craftsmanship of an era when furniture was made to last a lifetime and then some. At 40 inches wide, he is the right size to work hard without overwhelming a space, and his classic silhouette means he plays well with just about everything.

Arthur is ready to move in as-is, which means no wait, no decisions, just a great piece of furniture finding its next home. The minor nicks and scuffing are the honest marks of a life well-lived, and they only add to his charm. He is not precious. He is real.

Maker / Designer

Charak Furniture Company

If you've never heard the name Charak, you're in good company — and you're about to be charmed.

The company was founded in Boston in 1919, and for nearly seven decades produced some of the most faithful reproductions of 18th-century American furniture you'll find — Queen Anne and Georgian pieces, secretaries and dressers and cabinets dressed up with carved finials, recessed door panels, claw feet, the works.

The 1920s were the company's golden stretch. Then the Depression arrived and quietly took most of their competitors out at the knees. Charak didn't just survive it — during the 1930s they introduced one of their most beloved pieces, the drop-leaf Danbury dining table. That's the kind of stubborn craftsmanship that earns a brand a long life.

And then, in the 1950s, they surprised everyone by going modern — collaborating with designers like Tommi Parzinger and Donald Deskey. A house that could do both, and do both beautifully.
