Ferdinand was crafted in a small French workshop more than 50 years ago, long before precision machinery and modern tools took over the art of furniture making. His construction is a testament to handcraftsmanship, rough around the edges, yet brimming with character and charm. Each joint and curve tells the story of a time when furniture was made with purpose, not perfection—when the soul of the artisan was embedded into every cut and bevel.

This piece was likely made by a craftsman who saw wood as an extension of his spirit, perhaps by candlelight, as rain tapped on the windows of his humble workshop. His hand-carved dovetails—both front and back—are not just functional, but a personal signature of the artisan’s touch. The beveled panels on the back and underside of the drawers show a level of detail that hints at a time when furniture was crafted to be admired from all angles, even when left in a room alone.

There’s a history that Ferdinand carries—a history that’s hidden in the grain of the wood, in the soft bow of his right leg, and in the carefully repaired top. His imperfections don’t diminish him; they simply enhance his uniqueness, making him the kind of piece that tells a new story every time he’s moved.

Ferdinand may not have been lacquered or built with modern tools, but he is, without a doubt, a showstopper. His old-world beauty is one of a kind, and whoever reclaims him will find themselves owning not just a piece of furniture, but a piece of history.

Whoever reclaims Ferdinand will be a fortunate soul!

Maker / Designer

The history of this piece is cloudy. We imagine this piece was in a dining room for a very long time through many meals, holidays, family moments.

Finish

This piece has its original natural wood finish. We may have stripped and repaired a section but restored the finish to match. Sometimes it makes more sense to leave well enough, alone.

Color

Dark Wood

Dimensions

35h x 64w x 18.5d inches

Care

This has been finished in Curator, an Irish import not easy to come by in the United States. We prefer Curator for its amazing color palette and the glorious hard finish and shine that nearly matches that of lacquer. We recommend dusting often and using a very mild soap and soft sponge or microfiber cloth if necessary for spills. Do not use any cleansers with ammonia or other harsh chemicals, it will destroy the gloss finish.
