This piece doesn't try to impress you. It doesn't have to. — Casey

Tempera painting by Arthur Dove, Pond in the Sunlight, from 1935. Dove was an early American modernist; he has often been considered the first American abstract painter. Dove's abstracts were based on natural forms which he referred to as “extractions”, in essence, he extracted the essential forms of a scene from nature. His work influenced later abstract landscape painters, such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Julian Hatton, in having "an unbridled love of pure, hot color. The print is available courtesy of The Met Museum.

Our collection is sourced from the permanent collections of the world's leading museums and cultural institutions, offered here as archival-quality reproductions.
