Common Questions about Vintage Consoles & Entryway Tables

What makes a vintage console table better than a new one for an entryway?

It most likely is stronger structurally and can provide a lot of interest in addition to storage.

What is the standard height for an entryway or console table?

They range, but usually 28" at the lowest and 38" at the tallest.

Can a vintage console table be used behind a sofa?

Yes. Just make sure it's not taller than the back of the sofa.

What vintage pieces work well in a small entryway with limited space?

Lots of options: console, buffet, server, short bookcase, even an old fashioned hall-tree. You need to just make sure the depth of the piece doesn't impede the space too much, and that it meets your storage needs. Do you need drawers, shelves or cabinet space behind doors? That is your real guide.

How do I style a vintage console table?

To style a vintage console, you first need to consider the style of your room and the style of the sideboard. Pick items that align with that and then use decor items that pull color or texture from the rest of the room. Pair those items with sentimental items that spark interest or conversation. When placing items, I usually create two or three zones with items of different heights, textures, colors. Consider items like lamps, picture frames, vases, coffee table books, serveware you want to show off, baskets, plants, trinket trays, even seasonal decor. Lay out your chosen items and play with arrangement. Consider the height of any decor on the wall behind the console as well. As you make your choices, you'll begin to see what goes well together and what doesn't. Your eye will guide you to what feels right for your space.

What is the ideal depth for an entryway table in a narrow hallway?

Depending upon how narrow it is, I'd try to keep at least a minimum of 30" clear for walking space, but ideally 36". Whatever space is left will determine the depth that your space can accommodate.

Can I use a vintage sideboard as an entryway table?
Do vintage console tables come with storage drawers or shelves?

They can. There are many types of console tables. Take an inventory of your storage needs for the space and then shop accordingly.

What vintage brands are known for quality console and entry tables?

Essentially all of them, but there weren't as many of those sold in comparison to dressers, buffets, and nightstands, so they are harder to find.
