Common Questions about Vintage Wardrobes

Can a vintage armoire be used as a closet or wardrobe?

Absolutely. They were the first iteration of closets, before they were built into the structure of a bedroom. They also make great linen cabinets, if you have room in a hallway for them.

What is the difference between an armoire and a chifforobe?

A chifforobe, or chiffonier is a tall cabinet that combines both drawers and hanging space, similar to Gustavo. We categorize these in our Wardrobe collection.

What standard dimensions should I plan around for a vintage armoire?
Can a vintage armoire work in a room with no built-in closet?

Absolutely. They were the first iteration of closets, before they were built into the structure of a bedroom. They also make great linen cabinets, if you have room in a hallway for them.

How do you treat the interior of your armoires?

We can do a variety of things. If it's in great condition, we can leave the interior as a reminder of it's origins. We have also done tonal or contrasting lacquer finishes on the interior, or wallpaper can also be used.

Can an armoire be used as a TV cabinet?

Potentially. You may need to alter the interior construction to accommodate the weight, wires and other devises. Also consider that when the doors are open, they take up space in your room and often do not fold all the way back to be flush with the sides. That open door directly impedes the view to the tv from various angles.

How do I get a large vintage armoire through a standard doorway?

Many of the vintage armoires actually separate into pieces. The top cap and base separate from the sides and back panels so it can be unassembled and reassembled for moving. They fit together like legos and often they do not require any screws to hold it together.

Can a vintage armoire work in a dining room, living room, or office?

Absolutely, just consider what sort of storage space you need. They also work great as linen cabinets, laundry space storage or can even substitute for closet built-ins.

What is the internal hanging capacity of a typical vintage armoire?

A true armoire that is meant for hanging storage, should accommodate the depth of a standard clothing hanger. You'll want a minimum of 20" for the interior depth.
