Common Questions about Vintage Buffets & Sideboards

What is the difference between a sideboard, credenza, and buffet?

They are essentially all the same thing. But different terminology has been used by different genres and generations. Sideboard is the oldest term, a low cabinet used for storage in a dining room. Buffet implies something a little taller that is very convenient for an actual buffet of food, but also serves as good storage for a dining space. Credenza is the Italian term for the same thing, but came into fashion during the dawning of the Mid-Century Modern era. A credenza usually has doors that slide vs. open on a hinge. They often have tapered legs, are lower than a buffet and are usually meant for an office.

How do I style a vintage sideboard in my dining room?

To style a vintage sideboard, you first need to consider the style of your room and the style of the sideboard.Pick items that align with that and then use decor items that pull color or texture from the rest of the room. Pair those items with sentimental items that spark interest or conversation. When placing items, I usually create two or three zones with items of different heights, textures, colors. Consider items like lamps, picture frames, vases, coffee table books, serveware you want to show off, baskets, plants, trinket trays, even seasonal decor. Lay out your chosen items and play with arrangement. Consider the height of any decor on the wall behind the furniture as well. As you make your choices, you'll begin to see what goes well together and what doesn't. Your eye will guide you to what feels right for your space.

Can a vintage credenza work as a TV stand?

Absolutely. Just make sure the width is greater than your tv and the height works for your preferred viewing angle.

What finish options are available on your sideboards and credenzas?

We can do matte, satin or high gloss, all in lacquer.

How do I know what size credenza or sideboard will fit my space?

Measure the space you have, include width, height and depth. Ideally tape out the space on your floor and wall so you get a sense of the volume. All of our items have have the dimensions in two locations. There is a photo with the dimensions on every piece and below the product description, there is a dropdown arrow to click open to find them.

Are your sideboards and credenzas structurally assessed before listing?

Yes, they are assessed and if there are any issues, we repair them.

What wood types are most common in vintage American sideboards?

We see a lot of mahogany, walnut, birch, pecan.

What vintage brands made the best sideboards and credenzas?
Can a sideboard be used in a living room or entryway instead of a dining room?

Absolutely, as long as it meets your storage needs and there is clearance for you to walk by easily. Most pieces are anywhere from 19 to 21 inches deep so consider that when planning your entryway space.

How do I care for a lacquered sideboard or credenza?

Our lacquer finish is catalyzed (2k) at every coat. It is a very durable finish and will endure for decades with proper care. We recommend dusting often and using coasters and protective felt feet on pointed objects. For cleaning greasy finger prints or dirty smudges, this is the product we use for the "final finish".. It is water based and will not react with our finish. Do not substitute with a solvent-based finishing spray. We recommend both the Meguiars Final Finish and these microfiber cloths. Do not use any cleansers with ammonia or other harsh chemicals, it will dull the finish.

What is the difference between a buffet and a sideboard?

They are essentially all the same thing. But different terminology has been used by different genres and generations. Sideboard is the oldest term, a low cabinet used for storage in a dining room. Buffet implies something a little taller that is very convenient for an actual buffet of food, but also serves as good storage for a dining space. Buffets and sideboards are also commonly found in entryway spaces.

Can a vintage buffet be used as a bar cabinet?

Sure. Make sure that any cabinet sections are tall enough to fit your wine or liquor bottles.

Can I get a custom glass top added to a vintage buffet?

Absolutely, in fact we recommend them. Just add a note at checkout and we'll facilitate that order and send you a separate invoice.

What is a good height for a dining room buffet?

Most are in the 30"-38" depending upon if it's a leggy buffet, like Barbara, or more of a cabinet style like Ruthie.

What is the difference between a buffet and a hutch?

A buffet is usually one piece and is wider than it is tall. A hutch often has 2 pieces and is taller than it is wide. See Ember and Maeve for examples. On Maeve specifically, she is two pieces that were built separately and then are attached after completion. Also on Maeve her first drawer flips down to reveal a desk, which also makes are a vintage secretary.

What vintage brands are known for quality buffets?
Can a vintage buffet be used in a bedroom or living room?

Yes, just make sure the storage configuration works for your needs. For example I wouldn't put a buffet with all doors and no drawers in a bedroom. Buffets are often found in living rooms, entryways and dining spaces. It can be a very versatile piece.

How much storage do most vintage buffets have?

Most have 3 or 4 main compartments. Compare Chloe to Teresa. Chloe has 3 main compartments, with cabinet and drawer space. Teresa is all cabinet space with shelving, plus one hidden drawer.
