Common Questions about Vintage Lowboy Dressers

What is the difference between a highboy, lowboy, and standard dresser?

A highboy dresser is taller than it is wide, with drawers that span the width, such as Eden, Hiromi, and Theodore. A lowboy is the opposite, wider than it is tall, usually 55-75" wide. Drawer configuration can be 6, 9 or 12 depending upon the width. Examples: Francine, Milly, Davidson. A standard dresser, or commonly known as a chest of drawers, bureau or bachelor chest, is usually something that resembles a short highboy. They usually only have 3 to 5 drawers at the most. Examples are Cassidy, Brooks, or Dorothy.

How do I style the top of a vintage dresser?

I love this question because it most likely means your dresser is not doubling as a tv stand. To style decorative items on top of a dresser, look for design cues of the piece irself. Do the drawers span the entire width, or is it broken up into two or three sections. Are all the lines curvy or straight? The simplest idea is to center items in each of those visual spaces. From there, make sure your heights, colors and textures are varied. Lastly find something that ties back to the dresser or other elements in the room. That could be playing off the color or shape of the hardware, or notch detail on the drawers.

How do I know if a vintage dresser is solid wood versus veneer?

First, let me clarify that veneer is not bad. Veneer was invented in the early 1800s. So, almost all the vintage or antique furniture you find today, has veneer.  Veneer is usually chosen for its beautiful grain patterns. Some of the most beautiful woods are great for veneer but not for structure. The better question is "what's beneth the veneer"?. Check out this video where I explain  the various types of materials found in vintage vs. new furniture.

What hardware styles work best on vintage dressers?

The hardware choice should complement the dresser design, or stay within the same style or genre. For example, I would not put modern hardware on a French provincial dresser. For chinoiserie or faux bamboo pieces, take design cues from other asian patterns. Greek key is very traditional as well as a pinched corner, like the hardware on Milly.

How do I care for a lacquered wood dresser?

Our lacquer finish is catalyzed (2k) at every coat. It is a very durable finish and will endure for decades with proper care.We recommend dusting often and using coasters and protective felt feet on pointed objects. For cleaning greasy finger prints or dirty smudges, this is the product we use for the"final finish". It is waterbased and will not react with our finish. Do not substitute with a solvent-based finishing spray.  We recommend both theMeguiars Final Finishand thesemicrofiber cloths.Do not use any cleansers with ammonia or other harsh chemicals, it will dull the finish.

What vintage dresser brands do you typically source?

Too many to list. However, the most common finds for us in the Pacific Northwest are Drexel, Henredon, Thomasville, American of Martinsville, Widdicomb, White Furniture Co., Bassett, Mersman, Bali Hai, Henry Link, Jasper Furniture Co., and more.

Can I choose a custom finish color for a dresser before it's completed?

All items in our Rescued Collection are available for customization. The listed price includes your color of choice color, polishing of hardware and other details. Check out: What to Expect From Our Refinished Vintage Furniture

What is a waterfall dresser?

A waterfall dresser is a staple for the Art Deco movement. There are many buffets and dressers that feature a waterfall design cue. Visually, the side edges of these dressers are curved and smoothed out to appear as if the top surfaces fall into the side surfaces, like a waterfall. The same term is used to describe a kitchen counter that flows over the sides without any break.

What is a French Provincial dresser and how do I identify one?

French Provincial dressers are based on the country furniture of 18th-century rural France — think Louis XV's curves softened and simplified for everyday life outside the palace. American manufacturers like Drexel, Henredon, and Thomasville produced beautiful interpretations from the 1940s through the 1970s, and those mid-century pieces are what you'll most often find on the vintage market today.

Common design cues are cabriole legs, serpentine or bombé fronts, often undulating to pointy peaks. Carved details, including hardware that is incredibly ornate. Painted wood finishes with flroal or botanical themes, that might be called "shabby chic" today, originated in the French countryside.
